Alliance 9, Chadron 4 – SRs
An early lead and added runs late secured a Legion baseball victory for the Alliance Spartans Wednesday night, 9-4 over Chadron.
Keyed by a three-run triple in the second from Braden Honstien to open a 5-0 lead Alliance went on to win it’s 11th game of the summer behind an almost even split of Derek Morrison and Peyton Pinedo on the mound. Morrison started and went three innings with Pinedo closing out the final four frames as the pair combined for seven strikeouts.
Alliance will host tournament play this weekend with several teams from the area including Chadron, Morrill, and Bridgeport.
Gordon 9, Bridgeport 7 – SRs
Bridgeport wasn’t able to overcome five errors and dropped a back-and-forth game to Gordon 9-7.
The Bombers jumped out to 5-2 lead on a pair of RBI walks, double and a steal of home plate in the second inning.
A three-run Gordon homer by Seth Elsen tied it in the fifth, and Gordon added three more in the seventh to go on to win. Elsen’s homerun was Gordon’s second in the game following Trace Beguin’s two-run shot in the first.
Morgan Hurlburt threw all seven innings for Gordon and battled through 10 walks to earn the win allowing seven runs on six hits.
Mason Zorn struck out 11 Gordon batters in his 6 1/3 innings for Bridgeport but only issued one walk.
Bridgeport faces Chadron on Friday at 5:00 in the Alliance Tournament followed with Martin, SD Saturday morning at 9:30 and more tournament action on Sunday.
Sidney 15, Morrill 0 – SRs
Sidney handed Morrill a second loss in their summer series, and it was by the exact same score as 12 days ago, 15-0.
The Sidney bats erupted for 10 runs in the second and trickled two more in over each of the next two frames and the game ended in the fifth on the run rule.
Zach Means drove in four runs, Jackson Witt and two others drove in a pair each and Witt doubled twice.
Sidney used a three-pitcher combination for the shutout. Tommy Ellwanger started and went two allowing three hits and striking out three. Noah Nelson pitched the third and Dante Peterson finished the final two frames. Both Nelson and Peterson struck out three hitters.
Morrill plays Alliance on Friday, then Laramie and Chadron in the Alliance Tourney.
North Platte 16, Gering 15 – SRs
Runs were not at a premium in North Platte where Gering dropped a close but crazy game 16-15.
North Platte led 6-1 after the first, Gering scored nine in the fifth inning to close the gap to 13-10, then added five runs in the seventh to tie it at 15 before North Platte won on a walkoff single.
The teams combined for 32 hits and six errors.
Gering’s Austin Abbott doubled and led the team with three RBI. Five Gering batters had at least three hits.
Gering plays in Crete this weekend with games against Lincoln Christian and Pleasant Dale Friday, then faces Wilber on Saturday.
