Chadron State Sports Journal – January 25- Football Offseason Update with Coach Jay Long
The Chadron State football program is working hard in the offseason to increase strength, decrease injuries and find the next new batch of Eagles that will help the program rise back up to the top of the RMAC. Head Coach Jay Long joins Voice of the Eagles Dave Collins to update fans on recruiting, roster and coaching changes, what the team has done to address significant injury issues and we look forward to National Signing Day next week!

Chadron State guard Von Sayaloune has gone from Chadron High School star to learning the college game as a redshirt freshman, and now is a full-time starter who just played the game of his career for the Eagles. Voice of the Eagles Dave Collins visits with Sayaloune about his big night against Westminster, how he’s emerged as a prime player so quickly, the rumor he can bench 300 pounds and his future along other Panhandle stars who plan to don the CSC jersey.

The Chadron State wrestling season will really heat up with several RMAC matches on the upcoming schedule. Thursday the current RMAC leading Colorado Mesa Mavericks are in town to face second-place CSC in a pivotal dual. Head Coach Brett Hunter visits with Voice of the Eagles Dave Collins about the match-up, how the team is overcoming injury adversity and how CSC is preparing for this excellent match-up and the rugged RMAC slate that lies ahead.

Chadron State Senior Mel Herl has achieved one of the best marks in college weight throwing history. Herl launched her weight last weekend at Colorado Mines into a top-5 spot in NCAA Division II history and visits with Voice of the Eagles Dave Collins about the feat, the funny thing that happened beforehand, and how she likes competing against the NCAA’s best.

Chadron State heads into a fresh weekend of RMAC competition with a new found confidence after picking up its first victory of the season, and Coach Janet Raymer’s tenure, at Colorado Christian last Saturday. Season Finale Show – November 15 – Chadron State has finished up the 2016 season. Head Coach Jay Long joins Voice of the Eagles Dave Collins for a special extended version of their weekly show with a look back at the CSU-Pueblo game, how the team is addressing so many significant injuries, off-season expectations, recruiting and final season-wrap thoughts as the Eagles begin preparation for 2017.
November 8 – The Eagles are getting ready to close out the season with a road trip to arch-rival CSU-Pueblo this week. Coach Long talks about last Saturday’s game against another big-time rival in Black Hills State and what lies ahead with the ThunderWolves to close out the fall.
November 1 – Week 10 – The Eagles ran into one of the best teams in America Saturday in Golden with the Colorado School of Mines in a 40-14 decision. Coach Long breaks down the game, addresses how the staff is taking a detailed look into how injuries have played such a big part in the season, and previews this week’s showdown against Black Hills State!
October 26 – Week 9 – Things are starting to roll now for the Chadron State Eagles, winners of two straight after claiming victory at South Dakota Mines 37-33 in a “rivalry renewed” affair Saturday. Coach Jay Long visits with Voice of the Eagles Dave Collins on big plays and playmakers in the game, and looks ahead to the match-up with Colorado Mines this week in Golden!
October 18 – Week 8 – 73-0 is one heck of a way to snap a five-game losing streak! Coach Long visits with us about Saturday’s rout and breaks down how CSC was able to dominate New Mexico Highlands. Long also talks about the debut of an exciting local player getting his first snaps as a redshirt freshman, discusses any challenges that come up when coaching in a game so out of hand on the scoreboard, and we look ahead to Saturday’s match-up with SD Mines in Rapid City!
October 11: Week 7 – Coach Long visits with us this week about the Dixie State game and shares insights on what he saw during breakdown of film of the game. The Eagles find themselves at 1-5 mid-season and Coach Long shares thoughts on how the team is moving forward with New Mexico Highlands coming up next, young players stepping up and growing through the football maturation process, and how the team is going back to principles it was taught in Spring Ball by the Navy Seals.
October 4: Week 6 – The Eagles showcased an inspired effort and nearly pulled out a huge win over Humboldt State last Saturday. Coach Long breaks down the game and gives us an early look at Dixie State – another new team to the schedule as Homecoming Week is here!
September 27: Week 5 – Coach Long breaks down what he saw as the differences in two drastically different halves of football Saturday at Adams State, discusses the impact of missing five defensive starters, the growth process of a young football team and what’s coming up next with a talented Humboldt State club on Saturday.
September 20: Week 4 – Coach Long talks about changes coming during the week of preparation for the Eagles after a 1-2 start and road trip to Adams State next. Long also recaps what he saw studying film from the Western State game, highlights the strong play of the defensive line, and gives opening thoughts on this week’s game against the Grizzlies.
September 13: Week 3 – Coach Long talks about CSC flipping the offensive production completely over in the Mesa game, addresses the kicker position where a senior is no longer with the team, and talks QB’s, blocked punts and Western State coming up next in our September 13 show!
