The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has temporarily closed access to Blue Lake, adjacent to the Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Garden County, citing deteriorating ice conditions.
Al Hanson, Game and Parks northwest district fisheries supervisor, says warmer temperatures have brought open water along the shoreline of the lake.
“Fishermen would need hip boots to even get to the ice,” says Hanson.
A lease agreement with a private landowner allows for public use of the 2.7-mile two-track trail to Blue Lake, which is 22 miles north of Oshkosh.
Game and Parks staff members are urging caution to all anglers as the warmer temperatures have dramatically changed ice conditions throughout the state during the past week.
