This has been Pine Ridge Job Corps Aprreciation Week in Chadron, a proclamation issued by Mayor Karin Fischer and the city council to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Job Corps program and of the start of construction on the Pine Ridge Center, about 10 miles south of Chadron.
Fischer says she and the council felt it was important and appropriate to recognize the importance of the Job Corps Center to Chadron.
Fischer says the Job Corps Center provides a big boost to the area economy through jobs and operational purchases, while student crews have provided low-cost or free help on many community projects over the years.
Fischer says it may be easier to count up the number of major projects in the region that haven’t involved help from the Job Corps than those they have worked on.
Although the national Job Corps program is 50 this year, the Pine Ridge Center didn’t open until 1965…so it’s Golden Anniversary celebration will be next year.
