Box Butte General Hospital will host an open house for retiring Chief Nursing Officer Jane McConkey Thursday, August 21 from 3 pm to 5 pm at the hospital’s Medical Arts Plaza Sandhills Room.

McConkey, a 1971 graduate of Alliance High School, began her nursing career in 1975 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alliance after graduating from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

She spent 17 years with the Western Nebraska Community College Nursing Program, which was housed at BBGH, before becoming the hospital’s Director of Nursing.

McConkey was part of the staff that moved from St. Joseph’s to the newly built Box Butte General Hospital in 1976.

McConkey has seen several changes in the medical and nursing profession since 1975, but she says what has remained consistent is the nurse/patient relationship.

Jane and her husband, Mike, have five children and before 2014 comes to a close will have 13 grandchildren.

She is the daughter of the late Delbert and Marion Grothen, who moved to Alliance in 1953.   Both of her parents passed away in 2005.
