The East won the 30th Annual West Nebraska All-Star Volleyball Game at Cougar Palace Saturday afternoon, winning 4 of the 5 sets. The win was the East’s second in a row after 6 straight losses, but the West still leads 17-13.
The West took the first set 25-20, then the East swept the rest 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 and 15-11 behind 6-3 Brittany Lawrence of North Platte St Pat’s. Lawrence, who is headed to NCAA Division-1 Creighton, earned East MVP honors with a match-high 15 kills and 4 solo blocks to earn Most Valuable Player honors for the East.
6-1 Abbi Porter of Sidney, who spent her early childhood in Chadron, was the West MVP with 14 kills. The Scottsbluff Star-Herald’s All-Region Player of the Year will play her college ball at Bellevue University of the NAIA.
Demi Anderson of Ogallala was the Sportsmanship Award winner for the West while East honors went to Kenzie May of Southwest, a Chadron State volleyball and track recruit who plays with a prosthetic from her right elbow down.
The late Ray Haun of Scottsbluff, owner of Scotty’s Drive-in, was honored by the All-Star committee before the match for his longtime support of the game. Haun, who passed away since last year’s game, and Scotty’s Drive-In have purchased the jerseys all 30 years that the West Nebraska All-Star game has been played.
