An intense thunderstorm that rolled through the Alliance area around five o’clock Sunday afternoon knocked KCOW and Double Radio off the air for just under two hours.

Strong winds snapped off a 50-foot tall pine tree along Buchfinck Avenue east of the KCOW studio. The tree fell into several power lines, causing the outage to not only the radio station, but a good portion of northwest Alliance. Wind gusts of up to 73 mph were recorded at the Alliance Airport.

After the storm passed through the area, City of Alliance electric crews had the tree removed and power restored in about an hour.

The storm dropped seventy one-hundredths (.70) on an inch of rain in less than 15 minutes. Between noon on Friday and 6 pm Sunday, KCOW received two inches of rain. The Alliance Airport recorded 1.92 inches in the same period.

The Sunday afternoon storm also dropped egg-sized hail in the Berea area . An early Sunday morning thunderstorm dropped up to three inches of rain east of Hemingford.

The thunderstorms also knocked down power lines in the Lakeside and Ellsworth areas Sunday afternoon.
