NU TR 14 PilleFayetteville, Ark. – The Nebraska track and field team wrapped up competition at the NCAA West Region Preliminary Round on Saturday at John McDonnell Field on the campus of the University of Arkansas.

The Huskers added five more qualifiers on the day and are set to have 21 total bids at the NCAA Championships in Eugene in two weeks.

Veronica Grizzle was the first to add her name to the list of Huskers competing in Eugene on Saturday with an eighth-place finish in the women’s hammer throw. Grizzle entered the finals in 12th, but a throw of 195-10 (59.69) propelled her to eighth, earning her first trip to the NCAA finals.

Chad Wright used a huge throw of 207-0 (63.11) on his first attempt in the men’s discus to take over the top spot in the standings. He held on to that spot entering the finals and never let up as he closed out the competition in first. Wright, who won the NCAA discus title in 2012, will also be competing in the men’s shot put in Eugene.

The men’s 4×100-meter relay of John Welk, Dexter McKenzie, Ricco Hall and Tim Thompson posted a season-best time of 39.24 to automatically advance to the NCAA Finals for the third year in a row. The time ranks second all-time in the Husker record books.

The men in the 110-meter hurdles put on a display and Sean Pille did not disappoint for the Huskers. Pille qualified for the finals in Eugene with a personal-best time of 13.69. He finished fourth in his heat and qualified on time, with the ninth-fastest time in the event. His time also ranks fifth in the Husker record books.

The Big Ten Champion men’s 4×400-meter relay closed the three-day meet with another qualification for the finals for the Huskers. The team of Levi Gipson, Drew Wiseman, Jake Bender and Cody Rush held off the competition in another exciting race, finishing with a time of 3:04.87, just shy of a season-best mark. The time is another top-10 time at Nebraska and was the third-best time in the event.
