APS FOUNDATION AWARDS OVER $27,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS

Over $27,000 in scholarships were awarded by the Alliance Public Schools Foundation Saturday night during the foundation’s annual spring wine tasting party and auction at the Westside Events Center.

Dozens of items were auctioned that will help continue to fund the scholarship program.

While the focus of the event is on scholarships that are awarded to both upcoming and past AHS grads, the first-ever Alliance High School Wall of Fame recipient, as selected by members of the AHS Student Council, was announced.

Randy York1967 AHS graduate Randy York (pictured at left), who currently serves as the senior writer for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln athletic department’s web site, Huskers.com, is this year’s recipient.    York was nominated by Kevin Horn of KCOW Radio.  York began working for the UNL athletic department in 2007.  Prior to that he was a communications director for Sprint in Kansas City and was a sports writer and columnist for the Lincoln Journal-Star.   York began his journalism career by serving as sports editor of the Alliance Times-Herald in 1967.

The APS Foundation awards scholarships of which they have raised funds and that also are administer for other entities.   This year’s scholarship winners are:

Chase Dye — $250 Nic Gasseling Memorial Scholarship and $500 Jake Green Memorial Scholarship.

Megan Gould — $500 Logan Anderson Memorial Scholarship

Tristan Stephenson — $1,500 Vocational Tech Junior College Scholarship

Ryan Waggener — $2,000 Parker Hannifin Scholarship

Flor Acosta — $1,500 APS Foundation Scholarship

Josie Seidler — $500 Class of 1945 Scholarship

Parker Cyza — $1,000 Automotive/Communications Scholarship sponsored by KCOW Radio and the Route 385 Cruisers

Kolton Dubs — $1,500 APS Foundation Scholarship

Mikenzie Nordeen — $1,000 Continuing Education Scholarship

Eli Rischling — $1,000 APS Foundation Scholarship and a $1,000 Nic Gasseling Memorial Scholarship.

Darin Bottger — $1,000 Continuing Education Scholarship

Brianna Ridenour — $1,000 APS Foundation Scholarship

Amanda Hare — $750 AHS Class of 1962 Scholarship

Ian Nelson — $750 Class of 1962 Scholarship

Shawn Gasseling — $750 Class of 1962 Scholarship

Alyssa Dye — $750 Class of 1962 Scholarship

Cody Nye — $1,500 Vocational Tech Junior College Scholarship and a $750 Nic Gasseling Memorial Scholarship

Krista Carter — $1,000 Alliance Chamber of Commerce Ag Scholarship

Joelle Thomas — $500 Logan Anderson Memorial Scholarship and a $500 Nic Gasseling Memorial Scholarship

Rahne Kunzman — $1,500 Graduate Level Scholarship

Claire Tolstedt — $1,500 Graduate Level Scholarship

Kameron Heckman — $1,000 Continuing Education Scholarship

Sean Stewart — $1,000 Continuing Education Scholarship

Roy Kesterson — $1,000 APS Foundation Scholarship

Rylee Trout — $1,000 APS Foundation Scholarship

The Foundation also administers the Mike Garwood Memorial and Amy Stephens Scholarships that will be awarded during the AHS Athletic Banquet on May 27.

On another scholarship note, the Alliance Lions Club has awarded $500 scholarships each to Alliance High Seniors Chase Dye and Flor Acosta, and Hemingford High School Seniors Paige Phillips and Blake Hansen.
