WNCC SB SWEEPS DAWSON IN HOME OPENER

WNCC SB 14 white pitcher-catcherThe Western Nebraska Community College softball team put up 24 runs in a doubleheader sweep over Dawson Community College 12-8 and 12-4  Sunday afternoon in the Cougars’ home opener.

The wins improve the Cougars to 15-9 on the year, while the games were the first of the season for Dawson…last year’s Region IX D II champions. The teams will be back in action Monday for another doubleheader beginning at 12 noon at Volunteer Field.

 

               Sunday’s first game saw WNCC fall behind 1-0 after one inning, but plate 6 runs in the 2nd and 5 in the 3rd to grab an 11-1 lead.  The 2nd inning included a triple by Hannah Gonzales and a double RaVae Herrera, while the big hit in the 3 was a 2-run-scoring single by Shelby Campbell.

 

            Dawson came back with 4 in the 4th and 3 in the 5th to slice the lead to 11-8, but the Cougars added an insurance run in the 6th and  Madison Davis got the save in relief of starter Shelby McGraw, striking out 3 and giving up just 1 hit in the final 2 innings.

              Offensively, the Cougars pounded out 15 hits. McGraw and Kelsey Bernhardt each had three hits. McGraw had a double, three RBIs, two runs scored, and two stolen bases, while Bernhardt had three runs scored and three stolen bases.

 

               Also collecting multiple hits were Alysa Linford and Gonzales. Gonzales had two doubles, a RBI, and run scored. Linford had three RBIs in the game. Herrera had the other extra base hit with a double.

 

               WNCC started the second game strong, scoring 4 times in the 1st on 5 hits…including a 2-run double by Linford.  The Cougars added single runs in the 3rd on a double by McGraw and the 4th on a single by Jessica Ball.

 

               Dawson cut the lead to 6-4 with a 4-run 5th, butWNCC put the game away with 6 runs on just 3 hits in the 6th to end the game on the 8-run rule.

 

               Linford was the only Cougar with two hits. The freshman had a double, two RBIs, and a run scored.  Ball, McGraw, and Gonzales each had two RBIs. McGraw, Bernhardt, and Courtney Cloud each had two stolen bases.

 

               Jordan Smith picked up the win, going 4 1/3 innings in allowing three hits, three runs, and striking out five. Davis picked up the save, allowing two hits and striking out one.
