Nebraska Game and Parks is taking advantage of the weekend snow to burn more piles of timber debris left over from thinning and fire recovery efforts at Chadron State Park. Smoke from the burns may be visible today and tomorrow
The thinning projects have reduced potential fuels for wildfires and helped create more sustainable ponderosa pine habitat for wildlife in the area, and burning the slash piles in the winter with snow cover on the ground reduces the risks associated with burning.
Burning is done only when conditions fall within a relatively narrow window of weather conditions and when coordinated with local fire departments. All burn piles are checked daily until they are considered “out”.
