Charles A. “Red” Woods, 89, died Friday, February 21, 2014 at Good Samaritan Health Care Center.
He was born on October 3, 1924 at Hoffland, in Sheridan County, Nebraska to Charles Lee and Velva Blanche (Dove) Woods. He was raised in Antioch and Alliance graduating from Alliance High School in 1943.
In 1943, Charles was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corp serving in the south Pacific region as a tail gunner on a B-24 Bomber. He obtained several awards and commendations for his time of service in WWII. He was discharged on September 1, 1945.
On February 24, 1951 he was united in marriage to Mona LaVerne Smith at Pleasanton, Nebraska.
He began working for the C.B. & Q. Railroad in Alliance and worked as a locomotive engineer retiring from Burlington Northern Railroad. He also worked as a carpenter for Peltz Construction Company.
Chuck was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His family will cherish the many memories of camping and fishing and the many skills he taught them. He is survived by his wife, Mona, his children, Chuck (Kathy) Woods, Craig (Joni) Woods and John (Tina) Woods all of Alliance. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren, Becky (Morgan)Standage of Alliance, Tony (Katy)Woods and Ben (Cassie) Woods of Lincoln, Chad Woods, Shawn Woods, Tiffany (Nick) Boness and Brittany (Joe) Collins of Alliance, Jenni (Jacob) Kiefer of Cedar Bluffs, NE and Missy (Troy) Burke of Laramie, WY, his 12 great-grandchildren, David and Sophie Standage, Addy Woods, Lindsey and Korey Woods, Conor and Evelyne Boness, Eston Collins, Tanner, Katie and Autumn Kiefer and Ty Burke. He is also survived by his sister, Verna Mills of Peck, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Brad Lee Woods.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, February 26 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel. Inurnment with military honors will be in the Alliance Cemetery.
