Chadron_SignAn 8″ waterline running from the Chadron city dams to the Ridgeview County Club golf course south of Chadron broke this morning, creating a roughly 30-foot diameter sinkhole that has closed Country Club road.

The sinkhole was discovered shortly after 7 am by a surprised driver whose SUV wound up with the front end in a ditch and the rear-end hanging over the sinkhole.

Chadron Public Works Director Milo Rust says are repairs will be made as quickly as possible to both the waterline and Country Club Road, but that the road will remain closed to through traffic until at least Friday.

˜

Rust says the work has gone very smoothly and very quickly because of the good working relationship between the city and county.

As for the temporary loss of the waterline, he says it goes only to the golf course, so the rupture doesn’t affect the city water supply.

˜

Rust expects to have to replace 100-to-150-feet of 8″ pipe as part of the repairs and adds that he’s  thankful no one was hurt by the sinkhole and washout.
