The Upper Niobrara White Natural Resources District is holding a pair of Public Information Meetings on Tuesday in Hemingford and Rushville on proposed changes to its Ground Water Management Area rules.
The rules currently limit the amount of water irrigators in Box Butte County and the Mirage Flats can use each each, while allowing them to borrow or carryover across a 4-year period.
NRD Manager Patrick O’Brien says the proposed changes would reduce those limits or allotments slightly to 13″ per year, but extended them over 5 years instead of 4…giving them more flexibility in dealing with dry and wet years.
The changes would also put similar but slightly higher limit of 15″ a year on all the rest of the NRD…which covers all of Dawes, Sheridan, and Box Butte counties plus northern Sioux County.
Both Tuesday meetings will begin with an opening presentation by O’Brien and his staff, followed by a question-and-answer period. The Hemingford meeting is at the American Legion at 10:00 while the Rushville session is at 2:00, also at the American Legion.
