CSC Events CenterThe new Chicoine Events Center at Chadron State College, part of the $14-million dollar renovation and expansion of the Armstrong Gymnasium Building, is starting to take shape.

Athletic Director Joel Smith says work on the new arena immediately south of the existing gym has been moving steadily since late spring, but has made great visible progress in recent weeks as the frame has gone up.

The first two parts of the Armstrong project…conversion of the old swimming pool into a state-of-the-art 6,200-square foot weight room and the old weight room on the gymnasium balcony into the HVAC center for most of the building…have been completed for a couple months.

Smith says the focus is now the Events Center, with crews from prime contractor and construction-manager-at-risk Adolfson and Paulson of Colorado and its subcontractors working regular schedules through the holidays, taking off only Christmas and New Year’s Day.

They’re preparing for the arrival of the 75-foot steel trusses for the roof over the gym floor…with two cranes to be on-site by January 3rd for the delivery of the 14 beams, one per day.

Smith says there will a continued burst of visible action immediately after the beams are set in next month, then most of the work for a time will be hidden from the public as the focus moves indoors.

Smith expects new locker rooms to be ready for football and volleyball seasons, although he thinks the volleyball team will probably still play in the current gym…which will be kept as a practice facility after the events center.

The events center is scheduled to be ready for use for basketball next November. It’s named for the late Vern Chicoine, a long-time CSC supporter who donated $2.6-million dollars to the project through his estate. The gift is the largest ever received by the Chadron State Foundation.
