The annual “Santa Tracker” from NORAD…the North American Aerospace Defense Command just outside Colorado Springs in Cheyenne Mountain…is up and running through to Christmas morning.

NORAD has been “tracking” Santa since 1955 when the Sears store in Colorado Springs ran a newspaper ad with telephone number kids could use to call Santa before Christmas, and accidentally listed the number of NORAD’s predecessor.

Staffers there played along and the yearly excitement of Santa being tracked on radar began, first through bulletins on AM radios and black-and-white TVs and now on Facebook, Twitter and smartphone aps. The program has more than a million likes on Facebook and over 114,000 followers on Twitter.

Thousands of volunteers manning special phone lines will handle scores of calls per hour on Christmas Eve, while thousands of emails from around the globe are received and answered as part of the program.

The NORAD Tracks Santa toll-free telephone number is 877-HI-NORAD or 877-446-6723, online updates are at www.noradsanta.org, on Facebook www.facebook.com/noradsanta and Twitter https://twitter.com/NoradSanta
