CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — The public official on the take in “American Hustle” is portrayed as the film’s most selfless character.
But Angelo Errichetti, the real-life mayor of Camden, N.J., in the 1970s, has a more complicated persona. He was convicted of taking a $25,000 bribe from a fake sheik investor in the Abscam FBI sting that resulted in convictions for seven members of Congress.
In the movie, which opened Friday, Jeremy Renner’s character turns corrupt as a means to help his city and state.
Those who knew and studied the city say Errichetti was committed to Camden. But some, including U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews, say Errichetti’s corruption may have damaged a comeback for a city that is still among the nation’s most impoverished.
