A Wyoming man has been ordered to serve time in a Nebraska prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm in Box Butte County.
District Court Judge Travis O’Gorman sentenced 64-year-old Ernest Welton of Osage, Wyoming to eight to 12 years in prison Wednesday morning.
Welton was arrested by a Box Butte County deputy on the afternoon of August 19 after he was pulled over for driving left of the center line on Highway 385 near Alliance.
Welton was originally arrested for drunk driving, but officers also found a loaded 357 Magnum in the driver’s door pocket.
Welton was also ordered to serve one year in jail for second offense drunk driving. However, that term will be served concurrent with the weapon charge.
Court records reveal that Welton served time in prison in Wyoming for committing indecent acts to a child and was jailed in Idaho for failing to register as a sex offender.
Welton was given credit for 110 days served in the Box Butte County Jail.
