48-year old Lisa Lockhart of Oelrichs made a statement for the older competitors at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas by winning the 9th round Friday night.
It was the second win this year for Lockhart, who also had the fastest time in the 5th round on Monday. She now sits 5th in the world going into the final round Saturday night. Trula Churchill of Valentine tied for 3rd Friday and is 12th in the world standings.
Gering resident and 1998 Alliance High School graduate Dean Gorsuch placed 2nd steer wrestling on Friday night, but failed to make up much ground on the leaders Gorsuch, World Champion in both 2006 and 2010, remains 5th in the world standings with one round to go.
Another steer wrestler from the Tri-State region, Jason Miller of Lance Creek, Wyo, failed to place in the money Friday night, but moved to 11th in the world standings.
Former world champion saddle bronc rider Chad Ferley of Oelrichs placed 4th in the 9th round, but slipped from 2nd to 3rd in the world standings.
Cody Wright won the round to move ahead of Ferley and behind only Jake Wright, who has won 4 rounds but was bucked off Friday for just the second time
Also in saddle broncs, Nebraskan Cort Scheer of Elsmere didn’t place and is 8th while while Cole Elshere of Faith, SD, was bucked off and is 11th.
Bareback rider Steven Dent of Mullen had his best final of the NFR in the 9th round, placing 2nd, but he’s still just 13th overall.
