The Nebraska State Patrol says troopers this week seized 730 pounds of marijuana hidden inside boxes of produce in a California semitrailer. The pot had an estimated street value of $2.5 million dollars.
The seizure was made Monday following a routine inspection of the J & J Transport semi-trailer out of San Bernardino, Calif., along Interstate 80 at Waverly, just east of Lincoln.
During the inspection, it was discovered the co-driver, 40-year old Marcel Bud of Taylor, Mich. was wanted on an active warrant for failure to appear out of Lincoln County. Bud was arrested, but the other driver…48-year old Julio Pena Sanchez of La Palma, Calif., was allowed to continue
After further investigation, NSP investigators contacted Sanchez later that evening around 9:00 p.m. at a truck stop just off the Northwest 48th street exit in Lincoln and a probable cause search was conducted.
The search led to the seizure of 730 lbs. of marijuana in bundles concealed in boxes of produce in the trailer of the semi.
Sanchez was arrested and both he and Bud were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver. Both are in the Lancaster county jail in Lincoln.
