Walgren Lake State Recreation Area, about 4 miles southeast of Hay Springs in Sheridan County, has been temporarily closed to waterfowl hunting.

Nebraska Game and Parks spokesman Jerry Kane says the closure, which took effect Wednesday, came because of the intentional placement of grain on private property…essentially baiting ducks and geese to come to that area.

Kane says Nebraska and federal laws do not allow the hunting of waterfowl on or over a baited area, and that hunting can’t resume in such areas until 10 days after the bait has been removed.

Kane says that although the grain was placed on private property, the land is adjacent to the SRA and the baiting would affect it as well.
