Nebraska Republican U-S Senator Mike Johanns is pleased that the House and Senate have finally picked their conferees on the farm bill. They’re tasked with merging each chamber’s version of the farm bill into a single piece of legislation that can be passed and sent to the president.
Johanns says their appointment “takes us one step closer to enacting a long-term farm bill and giving our ag producers the certainty they need. There is a lot of work left to do, but I believe the House and Senate can come to an agreement on a fiscally responsible, market-oriented bill.”
The Senate version includes both farm programs and the food stamp program, but House Republicans…many upset with what they felt were too few cuts to food stamps…passed a farm bill that doesn’t include food stamps.
The Senate conferees include 7 Democrats…Debbie Stabenow-Mich, Pat Leahy-Vt, Tom Harkin-Iowa, Max Baucus-Mont, Sherrod Brown-Ohio, Amy Klobuchar-Wis, and Bob Bennet-Colo…and 5 Republicanss…Thad Cochran-Miss, Saxby Chambliss-Ga, Pat Roberts-Kan, John Boozman-Ark. and John Hoeven-N.D.
