025Ground has been broken for Box Butte General Hospital’s new 101,000 square-foot addition and renovation project.

Tuesday’s ceremony also served as the observance of the 37th¬†anniversary of the opening of Box Butte General Hospital and the kickoff of the Box Butte Health Foundation’s capital campaign.

The new addition will be built to the west and north of the current facility, adjacent to Box Butte Avenue.

Among the guest speakers were Charles and Ellen Lierk who helped kick off the capital campaign with a donation. Charles Lierk explained that following his hostage ordeal at his pharmacy in downtown Alliance in June of 2012, Box Butte General helped him relocate his pharmacy and he and his wife, Ellen, simply wanted to give back.

The capital campaign is in its early stages and will be run through the Box Butte Health Foundation. Foundation director Brooke Shelmadine says the early estimate is to raise just under three million dollars for a health and wellness center inside the new facility.

Shelmadine says she hopes the public will invest in the new rehab and wellness center monetarily, and then use it services when it opens in about two-and-a-half years.

And she says a solid campaign will probably begin around January 1.
