Sunday’s event will include a silent auction, a motorcycle poker run, 5K run and walk, and a mini car show sponsored by the Route 385 Crusiers.

Jane’s Closet was formed in early 2007 after Jane Wineteer, a former hospital employee, passed away from breast cancer. She donated part of her life insurance proceeds to Box Butte General Hospital in the hope that fellow employees would come together and make information and resources available to other cancer patients. Jane’s Closet offers information to cancer patients and survivors as well as comfort items during their time of need.
Scott Dietrich of Alliance, a longtime promoter and organizer of the event, says if those affected by cancer need help, he encourages them to seek the services offered by Jane’s Closet.
“We’ve helped people with gas vouchers, wigs, and money for other services,” he said. “People stricken with cancer need to, first and foremost, focus on getting well. Jane’s Closet can help with paying for transportation to medial centers for people needing treatment. Paying for gas should be the least of their worries.”
Dietrich has special motivation in his organization of Sunday’s event. His wife, Sandy, was stricken with cancer in late 2006. She beat the disease.
Sunday’s fundraiser includes:
– The sixth annual Stand Up for Cancer Silent Auction. 11 am to 5 pm. To make a donation, contact Scott Dietrich at 762-6640.
– The fourth annual Motorcycle Poker Run. Registration is from 9:30 to 10. $20 for the first rider and $10 for the second rider (same bike). A BBQ will be served following the ride. Stops include Chadron, Rushville, and Lakeside. Contact Brad & Sue Williams at 762-1380.
– Alliance YMCA “Going the Extra Mile for a Cure” 5K (3.1 miles) Run/Walk. Registration at Noon with the run/walk to begin at 1 pm. $10 per person with a maximum of $30 per family. The walk/run begins and ends at the Eagle Club. Maps for walkers and runners will be available. T-shirts for all participants.
