The Dawes County Historical Society holds its annual History In Action Day this Sunday from 1-5:00 PM at the Dawes County Historical Museum, just off Highway 385 south of Chadron.
History in Action Day began in 1996 with the aim of drawing attention to Dawes County history and to the museum, but now is focused more on showing younger generations some party of everyday life from years past.
Activities this year will include making apple cider, horse-and-buggy and tractor haywagon rides, butter & honey making, corn & flour grinding, spinning yarn, making rope, and sewing with a treadle sewing machine.
There will also be rag rug making, quilting, flintknapping, and an area devoted to military history stories.
Visitors will have the chance to see the updated Heesacker Toy Collection, the Carpenter’s Cove Barber Shop and the Blacksmith Shop or take tours of the one-room school and the museum farm, and a primitive camp site. There will also be a concession stand with cookies, cold drinks and ice cream. All of the events are open to the public and free to the public, but donations will be gladly accepted.
