KNEB Radio in Scottsbluff reports that according to a Cheyenne County Accident Report, Robert Hilpert was eastbound on County Road 40 when he proceeded into the intersection and struck the rear passenger side of the school bus, which was northbound on County Road 83. The school bus rolled one-and-a-quarter times, landing on the driver’s side.
It was unknown whether either driver was wearing a seat belt. The Cheyenne County investigator listed weather conditions as a possible contribuiting factor to the accident. According to the report, it was raining and the gravel road was wet in the area. None of the injrued were ejected from the vehicle.
Hilpert is listed in critical condition at Regional West Medical Center. 11 year old James Grant is also at the Scottsbluff facility, and he is listed in fair condition.
The others injured according to the accident report were 10-year-old Karter Whitrock, 13-year-old Monica Johnson, 16-year-old Aaron Grant, 12-year-olds Hannah Stahl, Joshua Hutchinson, and Carissa Fusterbold, and the driver of the bus, 73-year-old John Herboldsheimer.
Potter-Dix school district Superintendent Kevin Thomas says all the injured were taken to the Memorial Health Center in Sidney. Hilpert and Grant were flown to Regional West Medical Center. The Sidney hospital says four of the others were released, and the other three are stable and receiving treatment.
Cheyenne County Attorney Paul Schaub says injuries included, among other things, broken pelvis, fractured ribs, and severe head lacerations.
The accident happened at 4:20 p.m. Thursday evening.
