The trial of the man charged for the 2008 child abuse death of two year old Juliette Geurts of Gering has been delayed two months until December 16th.

26 year old Dustin Chauncey had been scheduled for a pre-trial hearing Friday and trial October 21st on a charge of felony child abuse resulting in death, but the defense asked for more time to prepare and Scotts Bluff County District Judge Leo Doborovolny granted a motion by the Public Defender for a continuance to December 16.

Juliette Geurts was found dead in her crib July 11, 2008. The case was investigated as a homicide after an autopsy put the cause of death as blunt force trauma, but although the toddler’s mother, Charyse Geurts, Chauncey…her boyfriend…and a second man were all in the Geurts’ home that night, no one was charged until a petition drive last year forced the calling of a grand jury this past January.

The grand jury handed down indictments against Chauncey and Charyse Geurts, although the charges against her were later dismissed on statute of limitations grounds.
