LOS ANGELES (AP) – Harry Connick Junior is in on “American Idol” and Randy Jackson is back in a different capacity. Connick will be the third judge, joining Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban. Connick had been a guest mentor in previous seasons. Lopez returns after a year off. Urban signed up for a second season earlier this summer. Jackson will be back, but this time as in-house mentor. Jimmy Iovine steps down from that job but will still be in charge of releasing music by “Idol” contestants through his Interscope Records. The next batch of contestants will audition in front of the new judges beginning in Atlanta. The new season of “Idol” begins in January.
