That’s higher than Superintendent Dr Caroline Winchester had hoped, but still more than a quarter-million dollars less that estimated as part of the bond issue.
Board member Keith Drinkwalter is chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee. He says the new heating system will replace a hot air system with one using hot water and gives more flexibility to each classroom and to the school as a whole.
Work will start next May, after the end of classes. MAC Construction will do the needed demolition and construction work with Rasmussen Mechanical Services doing the HVAC work.
The project will require replacing the lights in the 7 affected classrooms, so the board decided the new lights will be more energy efficient.
The Chadron board last night also decided to call for bids for a third time 4 months on renovations and upgrades to the rest rooms in the high school and in the middle school gym.
The district received no bids the first time and just 2 the second time, both for more than $400,000…well over the $131,000 available.
This time, the district is splitting the project into 3 contracts…the gym, the rest rooms by the high school auditorium, and the rest rooms in the rest of the high school. The bidders will be given wide latitude on start and end dates except for the gym contract, where work can’t begin until after basketball season.
