Police in Lead say a 67-year-old man killed himself with a gun in a park filled with several hundred people last evening during a July 4th celebration. The man’s name was not being released until family members could be notified.
The Black Hills Pioneer reports the incident occurred at Manuel Brothers Park about 7:35 p.m. Witnesses say the man was being escorted from the park by law enforcement officers just before the shot.
Lead resident Misael Rivera says he was standing about three feet from the man when he heard police say “put the gun down,” while witness Trever Neal says officers tried to stop the man but that he shot himself.
The man was rushed by ambulance to Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital but died.
