Courtroom GavelRAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A 36-year-old Rapid City man faces a mandatory minimum 10-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to sexual contact with a child younger than 16.

The Rapid City Journal reports that under the terms of a plea bargain, two charges of first-degree rape of a child younger than 13 and a second sexual contact charge were dismissed against Michael Slaughter.

By pleading guilty to the sexual contact charge, Slaughter avoided a potential life sentence for the dismissed first-degree rape charges.

Court documents indicate the victim was 5 years old when she was assaulted by Slaughter in 2010.

Circuit Judge Wally Eklund scheduled Slaughter’s sentencing for August 20th.
