Jerrod Jaeger of Lincoln has officially begun work in Chadron as the new Dawes County Public Defender. He will serve through the end of 2016, filling out the remainder of the term of Paul Wess, who resigned after being named to the county court bench in March.
Jaeger grew up in northeast Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Law, and says he’d never seen Chadron before applying to be public defender. Still, he knew where it is and says he knew it was the type of place and job he and his wife were looking for.
“It’s got a beautiful landscape and the job itself is a unique opportunity for me because it allows me to do the kind of law I like to practice. It’s not every day a job like that opens up, it’s what I wanted and I’m glad I have it.
Although Jaeger officially met the county commissioners and completed his employment paperwork today, he says it will take 3-to-4 weeks to finish closing his Lincoln practice and get fully moved to Chadron.
Jaeger…who says he loves fishing, golfing, and gardening…was one of 7 applicants for the job. He and his wife are expecting their first child. She is an educational para-professional and runs a GED prep course through AmeriCorps for individuals whose primary language is Spanish.
