Oklahoma City – The 14th-seeded Nebraska softball team twice rallied to tie the game in its final at bat – once in the seventh inning and again in the 10th – only to see its final rally come up one run short in a 9-8, 15-inning loss to No. 2 Florida in an epic elimination matchup at the 2013 Women’s College World Series late Saturday night.

Both teams showed great heart in the game in the 5:20 marathon. Florida rallied from an early 2-0 deficit on the strength of a six-run fourth inning. The Huskers then rallied from a 6-3 hole by plating three runs in the bottom of the seventh. But Florida won it with two runs in the top of the 15th, as Nebraska was only able to plate one run in the bottom of the frame.

With the loss, the Huskers ended their season with a 45-16 record. Nebraska’s 45 wins tie for the fifth-most in school history, while the Huskers made the seventh Women’s College World Series appearance in school history. All three of Nebraska’s postseason losses came in extra innings to top-10 opponents.

Junior right-hander Tatum Edwards (30-10) took the loss for NU. She started and went the first 4.1 innings, before re-entering the game to pitch the final 5.0 innings. Overall, Edwards went 9.1 innings and allowed eight runs (five earned) while striking out 12. Freshman right-hander Emily Lockman tossed the middle 5.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits.

Florida improved to 58-8 with the win behind a scoreless relief effort from Lauren Haeger (16-2) and Hannah Rogers’ fifth save of the year. The Gators will face No. 4 seed Texas on Sunday.

Nebraska scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Junior Taylor Edwards led off the frame with a single and stole second. Senior Courtney Breault singled with one out to put runners at first and third. Freshman Hailey Decker then hit a shallow fly ball to right field that scored Taylor Edwards from third base, after the throw went to first base instead of home. On the same play, a throwing error allowed freshman Kiki Stokes, who was running for Breault, to advance to second. That loomed large when freshman Alicia Armstrong lined a two-out, RBI single to center to give Nebraska a 2-0 lead.

But Florida answered with a six-run fifth inning, with help from the Husker infield. Nebraska led 2-1 with Florida runners on first and second with one out in the top of the fifth. But an aggressive infield defense which helped NU advance to the WCWS, saw its aggressiveness backfire. With two on and one out, twice Nebraska tried to get the lead runner on ground balls but missed a tag on the first grounder and threw late to home on the second. Instead of potentially recording the final two outs of the inning and taking a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth, the missed outs allowed the Gators to tie the game and extended the inning.

Tied at 2-2, another ground ball turned into a Husker error, allowing two runs to score. Another fielder’s choice where the Huskers recorded an out made it 5-2 Florida, before the Gators added another run with a two-out, pinch-hit RBI single. In the inning, Florida scored six times on only three hits, while just two balls left the infield. The Gators hit into four fielder’s choices in the inning, but Nebraska was only able to record one out on those four chances.

The Huskers cut the lead to 6-3 run on a sixth-inning solo home run from freshman Hailey Decker, a towering blast into the bleachers beyond left field.

That set the stage for a wild bottom of the seventh. Junior Kylee Muir got the rally started with a one-out, pinch-hit single. Tatum Edwards then hit a sinking line drive to center that was close to a catch but dropped for a single. With runners on first and second, Banda worked a nine-pitch walk to load the bases. Taylor Edwards then narrowly missed a double before lining a 3-2 pitch up the middle for an RBI single to trim the lead to 6-4.

With the bases still loaded and only one out, senior Brooke Thomason lifted a fly ball to center and Tatum Edwards tagged up and scored on the play. Florida threw home to try and get Edwards but the throw was late. The Gators then threw to second to try and get Taylor Edwards who had also tagged up. On the throw to second, Banda got caught off third base and was in a rundown. Florida third baseman Stephanie Tofft dove to tag Banda out but on the tag, the ball rolled out of her glove as Banda slid into home plate with the tying run.

After Nebraska was unable to convert a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth, Briana Little gave Florida a 7-6 lead with a one-out solo home run in the top of the 10th. An error, a single and a two-out walk loaded the bases before a fly out to right kept it a one-run deficit.

Taylor Edwards then tied it in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff solo home run to center. The Huskers then missed a golden opportunity to win the game, but were unable to score after loading the bases with only one out.

Both teams had minor threats over the next several innings until the Gators put runners on first and third with one out in the top of the 15th. A hard hit grounder to short deflected of Armstrong and two runs came home on the error as Florida grabbed a 9-7 lead.

Armstrong then led off the bottom of the 15th with a double and scored on an RBI ground out from sophomore Jordan Bettiol. Bettiol’s ground out marked the second out of the inning before Tatum Edwards worked a walk. Banda tahen lined a single off the pitcher that deflected into shallow left field. Tatum Edwards tried to advance to third on the play, but was ruled out on a third close extra-inning call that went against the Huskers.
