Deb FischerA bipartisan group of lawmakers aiming to combat sexual assault in the military says the White House is fully supportive of its efforts.

A senior advisor to President Obama met Thursday at the White House with members of the group…which includes Nebraska Republican Senator Deb Fischer…to discuss steps to stop the growing number of sexual assaults in the uniformed services.

Fischer says the issue involves assaults on both genders, with the majority of the complaints actually coming from males. She believes change is needed in the military culture so that victims are treated fairly and people report suspected assaults.

The meeting was requested by the White House after the release this week of a report that estimated as many as 26,000 military members were sexually assaulted last year.
