The Hot Springs City Council voted unanimously at a special session Monday night to buy Evans Plunge for $1.495-million dollars…an idea first approved narrowly by city voters last month. The purchase will close July 1.
The March 26th special election was called by a successful petition drive, but the measure authorizing the city to borrow up to $1.9-million dollars to buy and renovate Evans Plunge…the oldest operating tourist attraction in the Black Hills…was approved by just 11 votes.
Hot Springs City Administrator Harley Lux says the current owners have agreed to the details of the purchase agreement, which includes the city going to bid for roof repairs not to exceed $148,000.
The $1-1/2-million dollar deal covers the naturally-heated warm-water pool, land, water rights and buildings while the current owners retain gift shop items. An inventory will be done before closing, with the city to then buy remaining inventory at its invoice cost.
