The man accused of killing 2-year old Juliette Geurts of Gering more than  4-1/2-years ago didn’t make his expected first appearance in Scotts Bluff County Court yesterday.

Instead, the charges against 26 year old Dustin Chauncey were filed directly in District Court, where he will be arraigned Thursday afternoon on charges of manslaughter and felony child abuse resulting in death.

The charges were handed down in January by a grand jury called by citizen petition, and Chauncey hasn’t appeared until now because he began a 4-year Colorado prison sentence on unrelated drug and firearms convictions shortly after the grand jury indictment.

Geurts died July 11th, 2008, of what an autopsy determined was blunt force trauma. Chauncey was the boyfriend of the toddler’s mother…Charyse Geurts…and was in the Geurts home along with another man the night of the death.

Charyse Geurts…who told authorities at the time that she found her daughter dead in her crib…was indicted by the grand jury on charges of accessory to a felony and providing false information, but the charges were dismissed earlier this month due to statute of limitations issues.
