15 cars of a loaded Burlington Northern/Santa Fe coal train derailed in Bridgeport around dawn Sunday. The Bridgeport Police Department says there were no injuries in the 5:30 incident at the Main Street/Highway 88 railroad crossing.
A BNSF spokesman said at mid-morning that the cause of the derailment had not been determined, and the derailed cars were toward the end of the 124-car southbound train.
Tracks were damaged at the crossing and a large amount of coal spilled. The railroad hoped to reopen the crossing using new track panels later in the day…with crews from Grand Island assisting in the effort.
